Here's How to Use it...
Get a video of yourself playing and sit down with a pencil and a copy of the GIS (familiarize yourself with the GIS beforehand). Watch the video with an intense focus on yourself, watching every move you make.
Scoring Directions... 1) As you observe doing or not doing the Game Impact Fundamentals, mark 1's in the appropriate spots (positive or negative side).
Note: In a few places, you'll see that the 1 is replaced by a letter, to better differentiate what happened. Ex: Under 'Grab It!'... R = Rebound, and L = Loose Ball2) All marks or letters count 1, with one exception (see #3).
3) Exception... when an action leads DIRECTLY to a basket, it counts either +2 or -2 (depending on whose basket it led to).
Examples: A no Box Out that leads to a put back for them = -2.... or, when you make a pass that leads to a bucket, it's +2 on 'Sure Passes'... etc.4) Any one play can have multiple marks... but only one +2 or -2 mark.
Scoring Difficulties?... Here are some options to help you get better at scoring yourself:
- Review the Game Impact Fundamentals more closely, see if that helps.
- Pick only one area of the game to focus on. (Ex: only score the Defensive or Offensive Fundamentals, etc)
- Watch with someone else who can help you spot the Game Impact Fundamentals
- Use the Youth Version at first (which has only 7 Fundamentals, not 13.. and has no place for negative marks)
- And lastly, be patient with yourself. This involves you looking at the game in more detail than you are likely used to doing. You are training yourself to see more of what is going on in a game and the impact that it has. Be patient, and persistent and soon you'll be seeing more and the scoring will be easier.

Other Uses / Advantages:- Score a favorite player on TV... (much easier with Tivo because you can pause as needed).
- Score yourself in both good and bad games... look for reasons why you had good or bad games (i.e. more than just 'my shot wasn't falling')
- Develop your understanding of the game and your ability to read what's making the difference
A Special Note to Parents about the Youth Version... The goal is to 'catch them doing good'. You'll notice that there is no place for negative marks on the Youth Version (as there is in the High School version). The goal is to give you the opportunity to bond with your child as well as encourage good habits. You're encouragement will be the best motivation they can have... and the GIS will provide you with more opportunities to praise them besides points scored. So, have fun 'catching them doing good'.

Now for my rants about why this type of thing is important...
2 Important Questions...
- If you're the go to guy... do you consistently have a MAJOR impact in games that you have a below average scoring night?
- If you're NOT the go to guy... can you step on the court with significantly better athletes and still make a significant impact?
If this is your reputation... then you do the LITTLE things well. The little things that don't show up on the traditional stat sheets, yet determine games and ultimately how much you will get out of your ability.
An American Playground Epidemic...
As a nation, we don't teach fundamentals well. The international players are making it clear that, overall, our 'system' does a poor job developing players that do the little things extremely well.
We get our fundamentals from ESPN Highlights and develop them in pick up games... and so way too many excellent athletes (with poor to mediocre skill sets), fall to the side much ahead of their time.
The little things will always matter... they determine games and separate players. To reach your potential you need a balance of natural ability and skills... and train with a blend of competition and individual skill development work.
The Game Impact Fundamentals... are a guide to winning basketball. Good basketball is much more than the flash of a steal, a dunk, or a 3 pointer. The key is ... can you beat more talented teams? To do so... you and your teammates have got to be able to do the little things extremely well and extremely consistently. We believe that the 13 Game Impact Fundamentals reflect a clear and simple look at the 'Backbone of Winning Basketball'.
