How We Differ
Often,
basketball camps are like drinking from a fire hydrant. Lots of great
stuff is said or seen... but for a player to pinpoint just what they need most now, and how to go about it can be hit or miss.
Our answer is to incorporate some of the teaching methods used in Executive Development seminars.
Background with CCL... Since 1994, I've been an adjunct staff member with The Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, NC (
www.CCL.org) ... working with their flagship seminar called 'The Leadership Development Program. CCL is known worldwide for their innovation and effectiveness in developing leaders.
When companies pay thousands of dollars for their top leaders to be away for a number of days at
'leadership camp'... you can believe that a return on their investment
is expected. It's not enough to have just had a good experience. To increase the odds of change occurring after the seminar, executives leave with a clear understanding of...
- what effectiveness means
- exactly where their strengths and weaknesses lie
- specifically how they are going to make changes
Little is left to chance.
Blending CCL and basketball development... In designing Backcourt Basketball Camps, my approach has been to apply some of these proven training methods to the world of basketball development. For example...
- continue to simplify teaching points... to make them more memorable
- let players clearly identify gaps in where they are and where they need to be...
- use camp as a beginning to an on-going development process... not an end
BBS Teaching Philosophy... Nothing
is taught until something is learned. In basketball development terms... this means something changes and this change should be measurable. Telling isn't teaching. Its not enough to just say good things and hope they get picked up.
Our Teaching Methods...
We
engage players not only through drills, skill repetition, and
competitions... but through simplified teaching points, video
instruction, personal evaluations, classroom instruction, note taking,
video analysis, evaluating others and personal development plans.
Each player leaves with...
- Player Notebook... with notes, skill ratings, and more
- Detailed Evaluation of Strengths and Weaknesses
- Personal Development Plan
Not a series of pick up games... While there will certainly be play, challenge, and competition... this is not a series of pick up or tournament games. This is an intense learning camp. This is a chance to look deeper into the little things that create advantages, to pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses, and begin the process of making changes to get to the next level.
